The Evidence for the Resurrection of Jesus

The claim that changed the world

The earliest Christians did not preach that Jesus was a wise teacher whose ideas outlived Him. They preached that a crucified man walked out of His tomb, was seen alive by hundreds of witnesses, and was appointed 'Lord and Christ' (Acts 2:36, WEB). Nearly every one of the original messengers eventually paid for that claim with their lives.

A movement of that intensity, spreading that quickly, in the same city where the tomb could be inspected, requires an explanation. Something happened on that first Easter.

Facts most historians grant

Across a wide spectrum of scholarship — Christian and skeptical alike — several facts are widely accepted. Jesus of Nazareth was crucified under Pontius Pilate and died. He was buried, and within a short time His tomb was found empty. His disciples had experiences they were convinced were appearances of the risen Jesus. Their lives, and the life of a former persecutor named Saul of Tarsus, were transformed in a way that persists to this day.

The question is not whether these facts happened. The question is which explanation best accounts for them.

Weighing the alternatives

Some have suggested the disciples stole the body. But people rarely die for what they know to be a lie — and these men and women faced execution rather than deny what they had seen. Others propose the disciples merely hallucinated. Yet hallucinations are private experiences; they do not appear to groups of people at once, to skeptics like James and Paul, or in varied settings over forty days.

The 'swoon' theory imagines Jesus survived Roman crucifixion, escaped a sealed tomb, and convinced trained soldiers and grieving followers that He was gloriously alive. Roman executioners were unmatched at their grim craft; the theory strains credibility past its breaking point.

The best explanation

The simplest, most coherent explanation for the empty tomb, the appearances, the transformed disciples, and the birth of the church is the one the earliest Christians actually gave: 'He is not here; for he has risen, just like he said' (Matthew 28:6, WEB).

This is not a leap in the dark. It is the conclusion that best fits the evidence — a case strong enough to have persuaded lawyers, journalists, and philosophers over centuries of honest inquiry.

Why it matters for your life

The resurrection is not a trophy for apologists. It is God's public verdict on the cross: sin is truly forgiven, death is truly defeated, and Jesus is truly Lord. Because He lives, the believer's future is secure — and the believer's present is invaded by resurrection power.

Paul concludes his great resurrection chapter with a summons to action: 'be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the Lord's work, because you know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord' (1 Corinthians 15:58, WEB). A living Christ produces a living discipleship.

Common misconceptions

'The resurrection is just a legend that grew over centuries.' In fact, the resurrection message is embedded in creeds and letters dated within a few years of the event itself. 'No serious historians accept it.' Many do — and many others accept the underlying facts even when they cannot yet accept the conclusion. 'Faith and evidence are opposites.' Biblical faith is trust grounded in what God has shown to be true.
